Anthony is in close proximity to both Fort Bliss, White Sands Missile Range and NASA related projects in Las Cruces. These facilities use substantial contracting for services, testing and evaluation in their various missions and projects. Anthony is twenty minutes from New Mexico State University, which is engaged in substantial research and development for the Department of Defense. Anthony is a federally designated HUB-Zone. Businesses located within these zones have added contractual advantages when dealing with the federal government.

Fort Bliss was established in1849 to guard El Paso and was located along the banks of the Rio Grande, but was later moved northeastward 10 miles to its current location.
Fort Bliss trains thousands of U.S. Soldiers each year and is home to maintenance crews and supply units, and serves as one of the Army's premier bases for test driving tanks and other equipment and houses thousands of military vehicles. Fort Bliss is the home of the United States Army Air Defense Artillery Center (FBADACEN), and monitors missile launches conducted by White Sands Missile Range.
Fort Bliss has served as one of the major deployment centers for troops bound for Iraq and Afghanistan. Included on the fort is Biggs Army Airfield (formerly Biggs AFB), which was the site for the return of the 507th Maintenance Company, also based at Fort Bliss.
A large medical installation, William Beaumont Army Medical Center and a Veterans Administration center serve the military and retired-military population in the area.
Because of BRAC Realignment, Fort Bliss is undergoing major renovations and growth to prepare for the new troops which are being assigned to Fort Bliss.

The range is home to the Trinity Site. Today, is devoted to missile testing. WSMR is located on U.S. 70 between Alamogordo and Las Cruces; the highway is sometimes closed for safety reasons while tests are conducted on the missile range.
On one occasion, STS-3, the NASA space shuttle made a landing at Northrup Strip, 45 miles due north of WSMR Headquarters, when both Kennedy Space Center in Florida and Edwards Air Force Base in California were unable to accommodate a landing due to weather. |
